Introduction
The package-lock.json file in clay-server quietly recorded a ticking clock: "nodemailer": "6.10.1". While that version number looks innocuous, it pins the application to a release of Nodemailer that contains a high-severity Denial of Service vulnerability — CVE-2025-14874. Trivy's software composition analysis flagged the pattern, and an automated pull request upgraded the dependency before the flaw could be exploited in production.

What Goes Wrong in Nodemailer 6.x
CVE-2025-14874 lives inside Nodemailer's email address header parser — the code path that processes To:, From:, Cc:, and similar header values before an email is dispatched.
In Nodemailer versions up to and including 6.10.1, the parser does not adequately bound the resources it consumes when it encounters a malformed or adversarially constructed address string. A sufficiently crafted input — think deeply nested comments, abnormally long local-parts, or malformed RFC 5321 structures — can cause the parser to spin in a near-infinite loop or allocate memory without limit.

A Concrete Attack Scenario
Consider a workflow where clay-server accepts a user-supplied email address — for example, a "send report to" field in a UI, or a webhook payload that specifies a recipient. That value flows into a Nodemailer sendMail() call:
